Illinois Ag In The Classroom Teacher of the Year

F O R      I M M E D I A T E    R E L E A S E  from Kevin Daugherty, Education Manager, Illinois Farm Bureau Ag In the Classroom Project - [email protected]
BLOOMINGTON—The Illinois Farm Bureau Agriculture in the Classroom Program is pleased to announce that the 2005 Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom Teacher of the Year, Ferol Empen, was recently named the National Excellence in Teaching Agriculture Award winner.  Mrs. Empen will receive her award (a plaque and a $500 stipend) at the 2005 National Ag in the Classroom Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 9, 2005.  Additionally, as a winner of this award she will be making a presentation at the National Conference.
Empen is a 2002 Summer Ag Institute attendee and an ardent supporter of Ag in the Classroom.  Ms. Empen has a unique talent for integrating Agriculture into her Language Arts Enrichment program in Polo.  Her classroom is a virtual agriculture museum that constantly changes with the seasons so that students and visiting parents can experience not only Illinois Agriculture, but the importance of Agriculture worldwide.  All of the lessons and units of study maintain a constant focus on Illinois Learning Standards.  Her hands-on activities extend the arena of agriculture literacy into a wide variety of curricular areas.  This award is being announced early, as Empen retired at the end of this school year after a distinguished teaching career.
Congratulations may be addressed to Ferol Empen, Centennial School, 308 South Pleasant Street, Polo, IL 61064

This year there are 5 award winners of the Excellence in Teaching Agriculture Award.  They include teachers from California, Nebraska, Georgia and Utah in addition to Empen.
