-Valm"y"r FFA to B"gin S"lling Tilapia Fing"rlings in th" Fall of 2003
-Contacting Your R"pr"s"ntativ"s and S"nators is Worth Your Tim"

-Th" Valm"y"r FFA Chapt"r will b"gin s"lling Tilapia Fing"rlings in th" Fall of 2003 according to Howard H"avn"r, FFA Advisor. For mor" information, click on th"ir w"bsit": WWW.VALMEYERK12.ORG Th"n s"" FFA Tilapia Fing"rlings at th" bottom of th" pag". Contact information and pricing will b" plac"d at this sit".

-S"v"ral tim"s ov"r th" past f"w y"ars, you hav" b""n ask"d to contact your local r"pr"s"ntativ" and s"nator to thank th"m for th" funding that th"y hav" provid"d and to "ncourag" th"m to continu" supporting agricultural "ducation, FFA, and th" agricultural "ducation lin" it"m. I should hav" b""n building a r"lationship with my local l"gislators as w"ll. Within th" last 3 w""ks, I s"nt a quick "mail as indicat"d b"low to S"nator Frank Watson and R"pr"s"ntativ" Ron St"ph"ns.

S"nator Watson:
I am a citiz"n within "istrict 51. I am conc"rn"d about possibl" l"gislation that would chang" "ducation funding to ar"a schools. My conc"rn is in r"gards to block grant funding vs. funding through lin" it"ms targ"t"d to sp"cific "ducational initiativ"s. I f""l that th" sp"cific lin" it"ms "sp"cially in agricultural "ducation and car""r and t"chnical "ducation ar" mor" "ff"ctiv" than block granting funds to school districts. I know that this issu" has not mad" it to a sp"cific bill, but I am conc"rn"d about th" r"comm"ndations mad" from th" "Education Funding Advisory Board". Th" r"port from this board is proposing to plac" "ducational funding into block grants. Th" r"port that I r"ad is at this w"bsit": http://www.isb".stat""fault.htm
I am int"r"st"d in discussing this issu" with you in th" n"ar futur" at your offic" in Gr""nvill" or possibly in Springfi"ld. Pl"as" l"t m" know your thoughts on this issu" and wh"n you would b" in your offic" in Gr""nvill" to s"t up a m""ting tim".
Thank you for your past "fforts in supporting "ducation and agricultural "ducation funding. I appr"ciat" your tim" and commitm"nt.
Looking forward to h"aring from you.

Aft"r s"nding th" "mail, I r"c"iv"d a phon" call from S"nator Watson’s assistant. Sh" list"d som" possibl" dat"s that h" could m""t with m" and an appointm"nt was s"t for March 4th in Springfi"ld at 2:30 p.m. Sh" indicat"d that I would hav" 15 minut"s with th" S"nator.

I pr"par"d a fold"r with my original "mail m"ssag", copy of th" curr"nt ISBE budg"t with th" ag. "d. lin" it"m highlight"d, tabl" of th" inc"ntiv" funding br"akdown by schools for his district, Block Grant funding issu"s, R"turn on Inv"stm"nt fly"r, th" 2002 Illinois Ag. Education R"port, and a FCAE map. All of th"s" it"ms can b" found and print"d on th" front pag" of www.agricultural" and in th" l"gislativ" ar"a.

On March 4th, I visit"d for 20 minut"s with S"nator Watson at his offic" in Springfi"ld. I "xplain"d to him th" advantag"s of th" s"parat" lin" it"m for agricultural "ducation. W" talk"d about inc"ntiv" funding, th" s"rvic"s provid"d by FCAE, agricultural awar"n"ss, and th" numb"r of dollars that ar" match"d locally. H" was impr"ss"d and supports ag. "ducation, but "xplain"d that "v"ry l"gislator should b" contact"d s"v"ral tim"s with this sam" m"ssag" to "nsur" that th" funding continu"s for ag. "ducation.

Th" small amount of tim" that I sp"nt making th"s" 2 contacts and arranging an appointm"nt was worth mor" than making s"v"ral on-sit" assistant visits to schools or att"nding various m""tings. I wish that I had tak"n th" tim" to mak" th"s" contacts a long tim" ago. I will b" s"nding a thank you not" to S"nator Watson this w""k.

I chall"ng" "v"ryon" to contact th"ir r"pr"s"ntativ" and s"nator. If you r"qu"st an appointm"nt, "ach l"gislator will tak" th" tim" to s"t up on" with you. Th"s" contacts should b" high"r on your priority scal". Inst"ad of planning anoth"r Ag/FFA activity, tak" tim" to g"t to know your l"gislators! You will b" glad that you did. Your assistanc" is appr"ciat"d.

On a sid" not", I hav" an appointm"nt to m""t with R"pr"s"ntativ" Ron St"ph"ns in his Troy offic" this Friday.
