Assist IL FFA Chapter by Voting Online

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

*Message sent to all contacts.

The Southwestern FFA chapter is competing with other charities in the St. Louis Area for a grant from Monsanto.  If you could support the FFA chapter's project it would be greatly appreciated!  Voting is open!  Go to and click on "vote for projects" If you type "ffa" into the search engine, the SHS Agriscience Learning Garden will appear!  Please vote, validate your email, and vote 1x per day per email address you have until January 29th!

Our hope is that if this grant is awarded by this process, FFA members and Mr. Reed can assist other FFA chapters by helping with the grant process.  Please take time with your students in a computer lab today and throughout January to help make a difference.

The Agriscience Learning Garden

How Award Money Would Be Used - The Southwestern FFA Chapter is dedicated to educating the public. The construction of unused land around the school's greenhouse into a learning laboratory will be the primary use of the funds awarded. This new project is dedicated to the inform the public through hands-on activities about sustainable agriculture. The greenhouse is currently handicap accessible. The grounds surrounding the greenhouse will have paths established with plots of agronomic crops of corn, etc from our past and to the future...tropical maize. We would like to add identification plots of common weeds, vegetables, and biomass crops such as several grasses and plants in conjuction with the Omni Ventures group and the University of Illinois. The construction of the community garden, windmill and solar panel system, and the construction of an outdoor classroom for public meetings and lectures will take a considerable amount of funding that school districts do not have.

Contribution to St. Louis  - The Southwestern High School FFA Chapter is committed in the development of the future of the agriculture industry. The Agriscience Learning Garden is a project that will expand the Greenhouse Laboratory into an outdoor learning laboratory for agriculture. This project will benefit the communities surrounding this rural school with much needed education about the history of agriculture and it's future. Developing sustainable agriculture practices and exploring solar and wind energy are the focus of this exploratory garden. Community groups will come together within the garden to learn about composting, gardening, and landscaping. Groups will be able to explore the native prairie grasses, tropical maize, biomass projects, weed identification plots, composting sites, as well as assist growing vegetables and fruits. Solar panels and a windmill will assist in powering the needs of the garden and greenhouse. As developed, a biomass burner will assist in powering the project with biochar being used to condition the soil for the gardening project.
