Action Alert for Schools Applying for Race To The Top Funding

Thursday, March 22, 2012

*Message sent to only to District 5 Administrators and Ag Teachers.

Dear Administrators of Schools with Agricultural Education Programs:

As you know, the State of Illinois is preparing to distribute Race to the Top funding to schools with the goal of improving education. Since your school may be applying for Race to the Top funding, I would like to share some important information with you.

On the application that is due soon, you are asked to rank the Programs of Study that your school is interested in implementing and receiving additional instructional support and resources. As you prioritize your selections from the nine choices, please consider the important role that agriculture can bring to your students through STEM education. The State will only provide funding for the most highly requested Programs of Study, so it is critical that you rank agriculture, food & natural resources near the top of your list.

Agriculture plays a critical role in feeding, clothing and fueling our lives here in Illinois. Over 20% of the jobs in Illinois are related somehow to the industry that provides the high quality food that we eat every day, many consumer products that make our lives easier and fuel that powers the way that we live. Illinois students who pursue careers in agriculture, food & natural resources have a bright future as they aspire to apply knowledge of STEM to feeding and protecting the environment for future generations!

Agriculture education has a long history of providing an educational program that is the building template for the current STEM Programs of Study. We currently provide e-learning curriculum, funds for equipment, supported student organizations, internships, sponsor real-world challenges, specialized teacher professional development, career development resources, assisted student transitions to post-secondary education and methods to benchmark student performance. If your school would like personalized support with implementing your chosen STEM program of study, be sure to rank agriculture, food & natural resources among your top priorities in the application!

If you have questions/concerns, please let me know.  Thank you for considering agriculture, food & natural resources as a top priority for your school's application. I look forward to working with you to support STEM education for your students!
