2014 Illinois FFA Day of Service Goes Global

Illinois FFA Day of Service Goes Global

The 2014 Illinois FFA Day of Service will have a global impact this year. The 2013-2014 State FFA Officers are asking for your help with building the educational capacity of Liberian students with text books from your school that are no longer used or needed. Illinois FFA will be partnering with a number of educational, non-profit, government and private business to ship text books to Liberia this summer. More than seventy percent of Liberia’s economy is based in agriculture.

Why text books? Visitors to Liberia and representatives of the Liberian government report a large need for text books. Imagine for a moment, a school with over 200 students, with only 3-4 text books for all the students in their entire school library. Think about your school, are there text books that could be put to good use through the Illinois FFA Global Day of Service? If so, here is how you can help.

Please bring agricultural, science, math, reading and/or recent history books – last five years to the Illinois State FFA Convention. Please follow the following process:
1.      Identify any unused or no longer needed text books, and follow the school policy about utilizing these books for this purpose.
2.      Place them in sturdy boxes that are of average size to lift and carry.
3.      Bring them to the Illinois State FFA Convention and deliver them to the South West Corner of the Prairie Capital Convention Center on Tuesday June 10 or Wednesday June 11 of State Convention.
4.      If your chapter would like to volunteer to help with the collecting and loading of the books at state convention for your chapter’s day of service or community service activity, please complete a courtesy corps form located on the Illinois FFA webpage. Please include Book Drive Helpers on the form.
5.      Please contact Cody Carman, State FFA Secretary with any questions at [email protected] or 217-254-4602.

Illinois FFA is partnering with the Illinois Career Pathways and Liberian Pathways to accomplish this global day of service. Vice President Joseph N. Boakai of Liberia envisions a new generation of Liberians whose handiworks would be immediately impactful on the nation’s forward march. The Vice President said the program was the beginning of a “promising partnership between the Illinois Career Pathways and the Liberia Career Pathways.” According to him, “this program could not have moved an inch without the goodwill and support from the people and State of Illinois in the United States of America.”
