Nov 6 - Civics Taskforce Hearing - Possible Increase to Graduation Requirements

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

*Sent to D5 Contacts

I am sharing this press release with you in hopes that you can attend with students in FFA attire a public hearing on Thursday, November 6th, 4-6 pm, Carbondale High School, 1301 E. Walnut St., in Carbondale to share your concerns.

The first recommendation of seven is the Civics course requirement.   The hope is that the recommendation does not lead to an additional year course requirement in social studies beyond the current 2 course requirement for high school graduation.

Recommendation 1: Civics Course Requirement
Illinois should require a standalone civic education course at the high school level that comports with the definition of civic education given in this report. Course content should transcend a simple focus on government institutions and include participatory civic learning practices like current and controversial issues discussions, service learning, and simulations of democratic processes.
Full Taskforce Report.

If you are unable to attend a hearing, comments may be submitted via email at [email protected] until Nov. 7.  All comments will be included in the final report submitted to the General Assembly at the end of the year.

Attached is an example testimony made by Cindy Stover, Consultant, Illinois Association of Career and Technical Education.

Please let me know if you plan on attending.  Thank you.
