Coop Youth Conference - June 9/10 - SIUC

Wednesday, April 13, 2016

*Sent to all ag teachers.

The 2016 Southern Illinois Cooperative Youth Conference will be held June 9th and 10th on the beautiful campus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  The conference, co-sponsored by the Illinois Cooperative Council and SIUC’s College of Agricultural Sciences, was a huge success in 2014.

The conference provides 2016-17 high school seniors, juniors, and sophomores an exciting yet educational opportunity to learn about the cooperative business model.  They will learn about the unique principles and benefits of a cooperative, as well as the governance and operation.  The students are then challenged in a winner-take-all “Jeopardy-type” Quiz Bowl, using the information that they learned.  We take a field trip to see several local cooperatives in action and then spend the evening at the Student Recreation Center!

Announcements for the 2016 Southern Illinois Cooperative Youth Conference have been sent to cooperatives and county Farm Bureaus throughout Illinois.  We request their participation in sponsoring the student's registration fee, which allows the students to come to this conference at no cost to them.  If you know of a cooperative in your area that would be interested in sponsoring your students, please let us know.  We would be happy to send a sponsor packet to them.

Please encourage your students to take advantage of this great opportunity.  Interested applicants should complete the registration form

Students should also send a $30 registration deposit, refundable upon attendance, to Jackie Welch, SIUC Conference and Scheduling Services, Registration deadline is May 12th.  The conference will begin with registration at 9 AM on Thursday, June 9th and conclude Friday, June 10th at 12:30 PM.  Click for a tentative agenda.

Students will be staying on campus in the Residential Halls with two students to a room, and chaperoned by SIU staff and Agbassadors. There is no limit to the number of students each school can send, but we would like to hold spots for those students that have not attended the conference before.

Professional development with CPDUs will be held for agriculture teachers in conjunction with the conference.  More details to follow.

Should you or any of your students have questions regarding the conference, please feel free to contact Peter Dirks at (618) 453-3080 [email protected], or myself at (618) 536-7751 [email protected]
