IAITC FarmWeek Article October 30, 2017

Monday, October 30, 2017

 October 30, 2017

Another in the series of Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom non-fiction text examples to be used in your classroom.  Remember, these will be available every MONDAY afternoon that FarmWeek is published during the school year.

Questions about this can be directed to Kevin Daugherty, Education Director of Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom at [email protected]

**Reminder these questions are designed to use with the on-line version of FarmWeek.

*This week we have attached the word document of the story.

Note, by request of teachers we have included the answers to the questions immediately following the questions.

SIUC chancellor proposes restricting colleges.

  1.  Name the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Chancellor.  ( Carlo Montemagno.)
  2. What is the duty of a ‘Chancellor’ at a university? (answers will vary.  But should lead back to the chief executive officer of the campus. Very similar to the principal at your local school....only on a much bigger scale.  Consider this article from the Southern Illinoisian

3.   Describe the restructuring of the SIU Campus that Montemagno is proposing.  (going from 8 colleges with 42 schools and departments to 5 colleges with 18 schools (plus law and medicine))

4.  What would be the benefit of this restricting?  (Generative administrative savings  that can be reinvested in programs.)

5.  Why is SIUC looking at this restructuring?  (answers will vary, but shrinking enrollment and a loss of tuition money is key)

6.  One change to the program would move Forestry from the ag school to the School of Sustainability and Earth Science.  Why is SIUC in a unique position to offer a forestry program? (Answers will vary, but should include the proximity of SIUC to the Shawnee National Forest, giving SIUC an advantage over other forestry programs in the state)

7.  Other changes in the SIUC model would see Agribusiness moved to the school of Accountancy and Finance and a program related to rural health establish in the College of Health and Human Sciences.  What advantages and disadvantages do you see in this shift?  (Answers will vary)

In a related article, consider the impact of forestry as a career in agriculture.

View this highlighted article from Western Illinois University

This features an alum from their agriculture program with a concentration on urban forestry and his role in removing downed trees and vegetation after Hurricane Irma.

Remember agriculture careers are all around.  (you might also consider our IAITC Career Ag Mag.
