Another in the series of Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom non-fiction text examples to be used in your classroom.  Remember, these will be available every MONDAY afternoon that FarmWeek is published during the school year.

Economist projects local food sales growth to continue

  1. Why do economists, like Jim Barham, feel consumers are willing to pay more for local food? ( The attach value to it)
  2. What is the problem defining local food?  (It is hard to define the geographic area that is ‘local’.  The consumer and marketplace decide what is local)
  3.   In the 2015 NASS study 167,000 farms generated how much local food?  And how much organic food?  ($9 billion in local food and $6 billion in organic)
  4. What is one advantage Barham sees for farmers growing local food? (they receive more per dollar than on conventional commodities.  $.17 cents goes to farmer on traditional food, and $.40 or more on every dollar from local food goes to the farmer.)
  5. List the advantages and disadvantage that you see in Illinois Farmers entering the local food market. (Answers will vary)
  6. Discuss how important you feel local food is to you, your family and your school.  What obstacles do you see in increasing the amount of local food dollars spent in each category?  (Answers will vary.)
