Another in the series of Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom non-fiction text examples to be used in your classroom.  Remember, these will be available every MONDAY afternoon that FarmWeek is published during the school year.

Note, by request of teachers we have included the answers to the questions immediately following the questions.   

Large milk supplies weigh on market; some processor pull plug on services.

  1.  Explain what is meant by ‘got too much milk’.  (Answers will vary, but should include glut of milk on the market at the time.)
  2. Explain the problem of processors cancelling contracts.  (Milk is perishable,  if there is no market at the milk production facility, milk can’t be stored)
  3. Explain the trickle down effect of less milk being used  and dairy farmers exiting the market. (answers will vary, but dairy cattle will enter the beef market, and less corn and soy will be needed to feed dairy cattle)
  4. Investigate the price difference between projected price per hundred weight in the market ($15.70 to $16.40) to the cost of production (18.00 per hundred weight).  (Illinois Dairy farmers are losing $2.30 to $1.60 per hundredweight) 
  5.   Explain what a hundredweight is.  (abbreviated as cwt, this is one hundred pounds of milk.  Look for other definitions locally)    
  6. The milk pricing dilemma has both over production (supply) and decreased consumption (demand). What could be reasons for decreased demand?  (Answers will vary but could include advances in other alternative products (so called ‘soy milk’, ‘coconut milk’, ‘almond milk’, etc.)
