Springfield, IL...The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity in partnership with the Illinois Department of Agriculture, the City of Springfield-Division of Waste Reduction and Recycling and the Illinois Stewardship Alliance, will host a Vermicomposting Symposium.  The Symposium will be held at the Northfield Inn & suites Conference Center in Springfield on February 7, 2005 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with a reception following.  Sunday, February 6 at noon and Tuesday, February 8, there will be a tour of the New Horizon Organics facility, one of the largest vermicomposting facilities in the nation.  Located in Bunker Hill, it houses over six tons of red wiggler worms. The purpose of the event is to stimulate the vermicastings market in Illinois, to identify both vermicompost producers and potential vermicompost users, and to promote the use of vermicompost as an organic soil amendment/fertilizer.  This event will highlight the environmental and
economic development benefits of this industry.

The symposium will feature internationally renowned author and vermicomposting expert, Mary Appelhof who will discuss using vermicompost tea vermicompost as an organic soil amendment/fertilizer on flower gardens, food plants, vineyards, golf course, orchards and nurseries.  Additional presentations will cover using vermi castings in bioremediation, IKEA's project of vermicomposting the store's restaurant food waste, and uniformity of physical and chemical properties of castings.  Attendees will have an opportunity to construct their own worm bins.  Food and yard waste make up approximately 30% of the waste stream in the United States.  Practicing vermicomposting would reduce the amount of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) by almost one fourth.

Vermicomposting is a natural recycling process which involves the breakdown of food waste by red worms (Eisenia foetida).   The worms convert organic waste into nutrient-rich material called castings.  Teeming with microbes, fungus and bacteria, castings have earned the title "black gold."  Castings are the world's most nutrient-rich organic soil amendment, and help revitalize low fertility soils.

The registration fee, which includes lunch, is $35.00 in advance,  $50.00 at the door.  For more information call 217/498-9707.
