Note, by request of teachers we have included the answers to the questions immediately following the questions.

Lawmakers, coalition partners urge support for redistricting efforts

  1.  Name the two sponsors of HJRCA 43.  (Representative Ryan Spain, R-Peoria; Senator Julie Morrison, D-Deerfield)
  2. What is unique about the combination of sponsors of this bill in the Illinois General Assembly? (Answers will vary, but include a downstate republican and a suburban democrat lawmaker)
  3. Under current redistricting laws, the Illinois General Assembly (House and Senate) design the new boundaries for elected officials.  Who would be in charge of this if the constitutional amendment passes?  (An independent commission appointed by the Illinois Judicial branch would be in charge.)
  4. The current system of redistricting allows the Governor and the Illinois House and Senate to determine the districts. This system is a holdover from the original Illinois Constitution.  The current Illinois Constitution was adopted in 1970.  Why is there a movement to give more power to the people and less power to elected officials?  (Answers will vary, but the article quotes various people discussing the lack of trust in our state government.)
  5. Find your Illinois elected representative and senator (use  What do you notice about their district?  Why were the maps drawn this way?  (answers will vary, but will include the balance of number of people, and when maps were redrawn every 10 years, the political power in charge worked to draw maps to allow greater representation by their party.)
  6.  Why do you feel many people are excited about the opportunity to have this election initiative placed on the ballot?  (Answers will vary, but this is an opportunity to place the initiative on the ballot to change the constitution.  If passed this will create an election in November 2018 that would determine if the change happens)
  7. What reasons can you give for supporting or not supporting this initiative?  (Answers will vary)
