FY19 Three Circle FFA & SAE Extended Contract Grant

Hi Ag Teachers and Administrators:

Thank you for your participation this past year where 160 ag teachers applied for the grant  and now have a 12 month contract.   Attached is the list.  Please consider this opportunity for the 2018-19 school year to help your students, school, and community through valuable time provided by the agriulture teacher and FFA advisor.   Click for FY19 Intent to participate (initial application)

Funding - State grant in ISBE budget through the Agricultural Education line item.

-Retain quality ag teachers by compensating them for their time and effort and to encourage ag teachers to devote extended time to students, schools, and communities.  
-Recruit quality agriculture teachers by educating current high school students, college students, and parents that agriculture teachers will be paid beyond a current nine month teacher contract salary.

Eligibility and Requirements
-Approved 9-12 or 6-8 agricultural education program with a full-time agriculture teacher.
-50% match of the ag teachers extended contract time by the local school district, agribusiness, foundation, organizations, individuals.  Click for worksheet.
-Extended contract for the ag teacher(s) beyond the normal school day equivalent to a minimum of 400 hours from July 1 to June 30 each year.

-June 30, 2018 is the preferred date though the intent will be open until August 30, 2018 - ​Initial Application(Intent).  Identify ag teacher name(s), base 9 month salary, and TRS/THIS contribution which will determine the grant amount.
-September/October, 2018 – IWAS Application completion which will include the performance report for FY18 documented by uploading a pdf or excel file of 400 hours from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018.   Attached are two examples.   Each entry must include a start time.
-June 30, 2019 - Grant funding and matching funding paid to the agriculture teacher(s).

The agriculture teacher’s time of 400 hours beyond the school day is of value to students, school, and community.   All entities involved should discuss the divisions of the 400 hours which will allow for ownership instead of the agriculture teacher only making this decision.   Student leadership development; preparation for FFA career development events(contests), degrees, awards, applications; maintenance of facilities; home and business visits for supervised agriculture experience(SAE) projects; summer agriculture camp; school landscaping project; agribusiness connections; and a student workplace/employability skills course are good examples that would benefit the entire school and student body.  Think outside of the box with these 400 hours by the agriculture teacher.

  • Initiate a meeting today with ag teacher(s), administration, FFA Alumni, school board member, and agribusiness leaders to discuss the opportunity and 50% match.  
  • Example...Ag teacher 9 month salary is $50,000 with TRS and THIS included.  $50,0000 divided by 180 days = $278/day multiplied by 60 days = $16,680 is the total value to the ag teacher.  Grant pays 50% = $8340. click - Excel worksheet.
  • It is understandable to discuss with school teachers union representatives.  This grant is an opportunity for one of their members.  They should be supportive.  Explain the benefits.  If they do not support, then the teachers union is setting a prescedence for future opportunities when a grant becomes available for a science teacher, a coach, or a band teacher.
