Another in the series of Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom non-fiction text examples to be used in your classroom.  Remember, these will be available every MONDAY afternoon that FarmWeek is published during the school year.

NIFA-funded research supports bee health.

  1.  What does NIFA stand for?  (National Institute of Food and Agriculture)
  2. Define the following:
    1. Habitat (natural home or environment)
    2. Native (local inhabitant)
    3. Parasites (an organism that lives on or with another and benefits at expense of the host)
    4. Resin (sticky, organic, sometimes flammable substance insoluble in water)
    5. Nuisance (inconvenient or annoying)
    6. Cryopreservation (preserve with extreme cold or freezing)
    7. Germplasm (the collective of germ cells)
    8. Repository (a place where things are stored)


  1. Bee populations have been declining since the 1940’s.  What reasons do you think could contribute to these loses? (answers will vary)
  2. Since 2008, NIFA has invested $49 million in grants on programs that address bee health.  Why do you feel it is important to address this area of agriculture? (75% of specialty crops depend on pollination, and roughly 1 in every 3 bites of food in the US are dependent upon pollinators)
  3. Describe the break through research that happened in Minnesota with propolis.  (Propolis, long considered a stick nuisance from tree resin actually helps fend off bee hive disease)
  4.  Describe work at Washington State University with bees. (Researchers are using genetic consequences of parasites and disease on honeybees.  They are using frozen semen to allow selection of desired traits to adapt to geographic needs to fight off pests and disease.)
  5. How are farmers and other environmentalist in your area working to preserve pollinators?  (answers will vary)
