Another in the series of Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom non-fiction text examples to be used in your classroom.  Remember, these will be available every MONDAY afternoon that FarmWeek is published during the school year.

Illinois Virtual School launches online ag classes.

  1.  When did the Illinois Virtual School Ag Classes start this fall?  (Rolling start dates between Aug. 16 and Oct. 4)
  2. How many jobs did this new offering create for Illinois teachers? ( 3 online ag teachers have been hired.)
  3. Explain why this new offering is good for students in Illinois who already have a traditional high school ag program?  (students can take classes, such as online veterinary science, if their school doesn’t offer them.)
  4. What is the cost of an online class and how can it be reduced?  (the cost is $225, but a $75 scholarship is available)
  5. Describe the benefits you see in a program such as online agriculture classes at the high school level.  (Answers will vary)



Bonus topics

Guebert reiterates trade concerns during White House Meeting.

  1.  Describe the meeting that Illinois Farm Bureau President, Richard Guebert had at the White House. (Guebert and six other farmers met with President Trump, Vice President Pence and other high ranking officials and voiced concerns about trade disputes and tariffs.)
  2. Explain why Guebert is worried about young farmers in Illinois.  (young farmers typically have more debt, and could have a tougher time in the challenging economic times.)
  3. Explain Guebert’s concerns about the MFP (Market Faciltation Program-discussed in Last Week’s Bellringer).   (Deadlines and sales dates can cause farmers to be ineligible.)
  4.  If you were invited to the White House, what topics would you want to discuss with President Trump and Vice President Pence? (Answers will vary)

  2. How many student were members of the Illinois FFA? (18,453)
