Another in the series of Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom non-fiction text examples to be used in your classroom.  Remember, these will be available every MONDAY afternoon that FarmWeek is published during the school year.

Note, by request of teachers we have included the answers to the questions immediately following the questions.   

Commercial pumpkin harvest exceeds expectation; ornamental output patchy.

  1.  Writing Craft:  After reading the article, find several instances of the writer using words to express a meaning related to pumpkins.

(*ornamental output ‘patchy’- pumpkin patch and undetermined output.

*early season rains could ‘slice’ pumpkin production-cut or lower production and slice a pumpkin.)

2.  What can you share about pumpkin production in Illinois?  (Central Illinois grows the majority of canning pumpkins each year.)

3.  Explain how weather impacts pumpkin production.  (Pumpkins flourish in warm, dry weather.  Early spring rains could impact growth or cause disease.)

4.  How do most pumpkin farmer treat disease to the plant?  (fungicide is used to treat disease.)

5.  Pumpkin production is important due to the demand for the variety of pumpkin spice products that are being marketed.   Explain why you think more pumpkin spice items are appearing on shelves.  (Answers will vary)

6.  Describe your feelings on anything pumpkin spice.  Please use specific examples as to why your like, dislike or are indifferent to the flavor.  (answers will vary)
